Medicare (Mental Health Treatment Plan)
Bulk billed. No out-of-pocket session fee.
Eligible sessions with a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan are bulk billed, with no out-of-pocket session fee.
- Up to 10 eligible sessions per calendar year
- Plan and referral from your GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician
- Telehealth and in-person sessions are both eligible
Medicare without a plan
$100 gap fee per session.
If you have a Medicare card but no Mental Health Treatment Plan, you pay a gap fee of $100 per session and the remainder is claimed from Medicare.

Private sessions
$190 per 50-minute session.
For clients without Medicare, or who prefer not to use it. No referral required, and no limit on the number of sessions.

- Some private health extras policies may provide a rebate; check with your fund

Under Medicare’s Better Access initiative, you can access up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year with a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) and referral from your GP. Plans can also be prepared by a psychiatrist or paediatrician, and GPs can prepare them for children and young people.
Your GP will usually refer you for an initial course of up to 6 sessions. After these, you return to your GP for a review, and they can refer you for the remaining sessions available that calendar year.
At Pillar & Mind Clinic, eligible sessions under a valid plan are bulk billed. We claim the session directly from Medicare, so there is no out-of-pocket fee for you to pay.
Getting started with a plan
See your GP
Book a longer appointment and ask about a Mental Health Treatment Plan. Your GP will assess whether you (or your child) are eligible.
Get your plan and referral
Ask your GP to address the referral to Pillar & Mind Clinic. Your GP can send it to us directly, or you can bring or email it.
Book your sessions
Book online or by phone. We will note your plan in Halaxy and track your remaining eligible sessions for you.
Attend, with nothing to pay
Bring your Medicare card details to your first session. Eligible sessions are bulk billed on the day.
How payment works.
Private session fees are processed securely through Halaxy at the time of your appointment. Card details are stored by Halaxy, not by the clinic website. Bulk-billed sessions are claimed directly from Medicare, so there is nothing for you to pay on the day.

Cancellation policy
Appointment times are reserved for you. If you need to change or cancel, please give at least 48 hours’ notice so the time can be offered to someone else.
- Less than 48 hours’ notice: 50% of the private session fee
- Missed appointment without notice: 100% of the private session fee
- Cancellation fees cannot be bulk billed or claimed from Medicare.

Do I need a referral to see you?
No. Without a referral, Medicare card holders pay a $100 gap fee per session, and clients without Medicare pay the private fee of $190. A Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP is only needed if you would like your sessions bulk billed.
Can my child get a Mental Health Treatment Plan?
Yes. GPs can prepare Mental Health Treatment Plans for children and young people. A parent or guardian usually attends the GP appointment with the child.
Does a Mental Health Treatment Plan expire?
Plans don’t expire, but the number of bulk-billed sessions resets each calendar year, and your GP needs to review the plan after the initial course of sessions before further sessions are referred.
What happens once my plan sessions for the year are used?
You are welcome to continue with a $100 gap fee per session using your Medicare card, or wait until your eligible sessions renew in the new calendar year. We will let you know in advance when you are approaching the limit.
Are parent-only sessions bulk billed?

Are reports and letters included?
GP correspondence required under a Mental Health Treatment Plan is included. Longer reports for schools, NDIS or other purposes are quoted in advance and are not covered by Medicare.
